1st SHTCA week by KDU PG Campus

>> Saturday, October 24, 2009

Well, SHTCA means School of Hospitality Tourism and Culinary Arts.. And our school/department is located in the whole of the first floor in our college.
2009 is the first year our school organize the event.. The theme for the special event is 'Celebrating Unity Through Diversity.' The event started 2 weeks ago and ended yerterday, 23/10/2009.
Some of the competitions envolved are Essay writing, Poster, Singing? Mr and Miss SHTCA, Cooking competiton, Pastry Competition and etc..

I took part in the Pastry competition because the entry for the 'black box' cooking competition was fulled. Only my lucky leader got into the competition holding competitor ticket #15.. Heh!
4 of us from my group joined the pastry competition which was held on the 20th as there are still many places left..

1 hour of collecting ingredients, baking and garnishing is certainly not enough if we chosed to make complicated products.. End up, I made a blueberry gateau which my FP 2 chef said I could not win because it is too simple. My groupmate, Charles Ooi made swissroll.. Finally, we both won medals ;]
Oh well.. It all depends on the look, taste and garnish right?

Shaking hands with our Principal, Dr. Chong..
Gold medal uh! First gold medal for first competition..

Group Photo.. My FP2 chef Darren, Esther (3rd runner-up), Charles Ooi (Bronze), Dr. Chong, Myself, Ben (silver), Some director of Education and our Head of Department, Mr. Prakash..

This is the hot cooking, black box category.. My leader, Yan You got silver medal.. He is so good he is the only junior in the competition who won almost all the seniors but 1.. Heh.. Cheers ;)

Group Photo again..

Then we took a photo with our group members.. The most well known 'paling bising tapi boleh kerja group,' gold, silver and bronze also got.. Tapau!

Heh.. But sorry lah if u want to see our product pictures.. Sent to judge table cannt take photo ady.. peace [v]
Ahh.. This is the college competition, wonder if we can do really good for the real outside competitions.. Things will be real different..

Finally, thanks to Jeff who sponsored me and all our group members who supported us.. Merci!

Friday Morning

>> Thursday, October 22, 2009

We have changed our hiking time from evening to early in the morning.. The reason is, we have replacement class for about 1 month from 4 pm to 8pm..
Anyone who wants to join us can simply do so.. 7.30am at Youth Park..
After hiking, we will be having breakfast at any kopitiam near that area..

For the first morning hike, I was late! Snooze my mobile till the battery flat.. Then I followed obala ( the photo provider ) who was waiting outside my house for 30 minutes i think.. Reached the bottom of the hill at about 8.30am and we waited for captain Mozi..

Some of them 'ppk-ed' us so left the 5 of us only.. There are many teenager groups went hiking in the morning too.. I saw my friends with their girls.. LOL!

Everybody practicing 'Healthy Line' concept huh? So, my hiking partners are:

COBRA! We have all sorts of nicks mah.. He was named COBRA after smoking his first sisha!

Obala.. The emo-kid..

Gareth.. He was actually pointing at me and vice versa but I crop this pic because I looked like Gorilla.. And No, I am not..

This is me.. Hairless and Shoeless.. cause broke already..

Captain Mozi..

If you want to know, I would like to share:
- morning hike is cool and refreshing
- morning hike has less monkeys
- morning hike have cool people who boil tea using super mini stove and kettle
- morning hike you can see sunrise
- morning hike you can see me ;]

Anyway.. This Friday, which is tomorrow, our plan is cancelled as we are having some volunteery work in college.. Help out during Fontherra Pastry challenge..
Next Friday, we shall sweat and burn all unwanted calories..

Unripe Papaya

>> Saturday, October 17, 2009

If you had a BAD day, it is probably you received an unripe papaya.. Do you know how horrible is the unripe papaya? First of all it looks green, contain lots of sap that can cause blindness and they make you itchy..
For fruit carving, an unripe papaya is hard like a wood.. So, carving an unripe papaya is really like carving on a piece of wood..

If the BAD day continues, it is because of the time given.. Lecturer was late for 1 hours due to his transport problem.. BUT, we were not given another 1 hour extra before we hand up our work.. Just because previous class people can finish them in 2 hours? Hello, we are carving unripe papaya~
I pity some of my coursemates who is in trouble trying to finish their carving..

Later on, he brought in our juniors to see our piece of artwork.. 'Pai seh lohh'

My partner.. Sharing the centre piece.. We name it 'Summer Garden' due to the carved flowers and the garden-like decorations..

My papaya..

our work..

With the swans.. Mirror is like the pond water.. Muhaha!

Reese and his pai pan posts..
Anyway, it was a satisfying day for me..

Anyone wanna buy fruit carving? LOLz~~

Duckie's Open House

Hello world!
I am back after a few weeks with no new posts..
Very sorry lah.. This semester too busy and got lah alot of 'duno-what-should-I-do' stuffs occured..

So, for the delayed posts #1.. It was about Jeff's new house ;)
They picked a date which is on 10/10/2009 and it is a Saturday..
Chun date and day for an open house right?

Foods were prepared by his mommy and us, the KDU chef 4 student..

CKT YY @ high pressure stove..

One night before party! Look at Bala measuring the melted butter.. We made 4 cheese cake and 1 tiramisu..

And the real day itself, we had CKT! Penang famous hawker dish aka the 'Char Koay Teow.'
I was actually playing around only lah.. The real CKT man is Daniel and Yan You..

The above is Reese and Jeff.. They are playing cards actually.. BUT, duno why both face faced different ways.. Camera shy kut?

And then the Satay.. 4kg also finished.. Lembu told me it was not sweet enough so I forced him to eat with the sauce.. 1kg of peanut poured into the sauce till the oil disappeared.. LOL!

The CKT man.. Daniel and his frying skill.. Action Kitchen Chef..

Carved papaya, tiramisu and chocolate sauced eclairs..

The food supply.. Tandoori & mushroom sausage, tom yam bihun, shepherd pie, lamb shank pie, pasta salad, chicken satay, curry chicken and vegetables..

Despite the rain, their guests still enjoy the night..
We had booze upstairs and Lembu turned into a 'dark cow' because his face turned black instead of red.. He is too HELLthy!

AND..

Finally, welcome to TG BG and have fun staying in hillside! Hehehe..

[BTW, photos are stolen from Chan Lilian, Maybelle Loh and YingLai Chow via Facebook]

Tiram miss you..

>> Monday, October 5, 2009

Second experiment on the tiramisu cake.. I got this recipe from a senior and actually it is the 'classic tiramisu' recipe.. Hmm.. Classic tiramisu is not as hard as the modern ones.. They are watery like the Bavarious Cream from Germany.. Will harden only if you throw the cream into freezer and they are usually served in a glass because of the soft texture.. The cake one uses confectioners sugar whipped with mascarpone cheese so that it remains hard.. Don't need the egg yolk!

How sad I have mistaken it.. But then the taste is awesome lah.. Haha..

One slice..

The main ingredient for all tiramisu.. Mascarpone cheese.. It is hard to find this product in the market.. Mostly can get from frozen food suppliers only..

After chilling and freezing.. I manage to get the shape.. Not bad lah..

As usual, sprinkle unsweetened coco powder on the cake top..

Then garnish with shaved dark chocolate..
The next time I make.. I will publish the recipe lah..

Good night.. Time to take a long sleep, preparing for the long day in college tomorrow..
